Telex Rock around the clock

Take one of the happiest sounding songs in the world.
Suck all the life and soul out of it.
And make it sound like music to slit your wrists to.

These poor men sound depressed to me

Put them out of their misery I say.

Two things make this a magnificent pop moment:
1.It launched them in the UK, thus making them the only other act I'd heard of in the 1980 Eurovision (where their equally sarcastic entry, 'Neurovision', took the Belgian obsession with winning this silly contest as its theme). Songs mocking the very contest you're in go down badly, however. Nul Points, but Norway's entry that year was suicidally perverse and so Telex's barbed comments were forgotten in the face of Sami folk-tunes about power stations.
2. Simon Bates hated this, so when it charted we all cheered.
